In February 2020, a surprising video started to flow into on Chinese language social media. A bunch of African kids are being instructed, by a voice off-camera, to chant phrases in Chinese language. The youngsters repeat the phrases with smiles and enthusiasm — however they don’t perceive that what they’re being instructed to say is “I’m a black monster and my IQ is low.” The clip ignited outrage in China and past.
However no-one ever answered the essential questions: Why was this filmed? The place was it shot? Who made it?
These questions ship #BBCAfricaEye and #BBCEyeInvestigations reporters Runako Celina and Henry Mhango on a journey right into a Chinese language video-making trade that exploits weak kids throughout the continent.
